The evolution of HIFU (High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound) treatment is a tale of scientific progress and collaboration, shifting from medical diagnostics to cosmetic and medical aesthetics. 

HIFU emerged as a non-invasive solution for skin concerns, particularly laxity and wrinkles, without surgery.

The journey traces back to medical ultrasound, used for diagnostics since the mid-20th century. Focusing ultrasound energy on specific areas for therapeutic purposes gained traction. It harnessed ultrasound waves to create controlled heat in tissues, tightening skin and boosting collagen.

Dr. Michel Ter-Pogossian’s work in the 1950s and 1960s at Washington University in St. Louis pioneered HIFU research. He laid the groundwork for therapeutic ultrasound, including HIFU.

HIFU’s breakthrough came later. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, companies like Ulthera (now Merz Aesthetics) developed HIFU devices for cosmetic use. They targeted outer skin layers, resulting in visible skin tightening. 

The FDA approved Ulthera’s device in 2009 for eyebrow lifts, affirming HIFU’s safety and effectiveness.
